From micrometeoroids in SMILE to radiation in Roman, an intern-student-post doc journey!

Tom has been working in the space-based imaging field since 2017, predominantly focused on the European Space Agency mission SMILE. His work on SMILE is focused on the X-ray performance of the X-ray detectors after irradiation, while also contributing to the detector calibration activities and leading the future micrometeoroid experimental work package. During his PhD, his work led to both the re-design of the thermal subsystem for SMILE SXI and changes to the in-orbit operating modes of the detectors. His work is now branching out to new missions and technologies including working on development of low-light for the NASA’s Roman Space Telescope and development of the next-generation CMOS X-ray sensor.
